A remarkable connection between two apartment complexes was recently unveiled in Utrecht. Because of that, the resident students and young professionals can now easily cross over to their neighbours via a beautifully lit, illuminated skybridge. Serge Stolk, owner of ID Light (Oudkarspel), was the mind behind the lighting design.

Illuminated skybridge connects apartments

“The skybridge lets the residents of several floors cross over from one complex to the other”, Serge explains. “It even features a beautiful set of stairs that alternates endlessly up and down, so you can move between floors. The building owner wanted the skybridge to be illuminated and asked the installer, who approached us. And that's how we came into the picture."

“It was definitely no piece of cake. The position of the supply unit was a challenge to begin with. However, the fact that part of the lighting system is covered and that part is out in the open also played a role. We wanted the light color to match that of the street lighting, In the end, we opted for 3,000K LED lighting that is as functional as it is decorative, both for the “fusilli stairs" and for the skybridges. And because the system is synced with an astronomical clock, the lights switch on automatically when darkness falls.”

““The entire neon flex lighting system, including connectors, was custom made””

“Working with Tronix - or with light specialist Kevin in this case - was a match made in heaven. It didn’t take us long to realise that a custom approach was the only way. We dimensioned the whole system just right and had all neon flex strips, including connectors, custom-made for us. Convenience was a big factor: the last thing I wanted was to get all my tools, shrink tubing and adhesives out myself. And when we found several defective LED strips during installation, Kevin followed through and had new strips made right away. We're all delighted with the end result.”
